Treaties Recognition Week

One example is from Cochrane Public School, where students learn about treaties: what a treaty is, the historical timeline of treaties, what a Wampum Belt is, an explanation of the purpose of the Two Row Wampum Belt, information on Treaty Nine, and how treaties can be used to form positive working relationships within communities and classrooms.

Students applied their learning by forming their classroom treaty. They voiced what they needed to cultivate a positive learning experience and learning environment and expressed this by creating a representation of a Wampum Belt. Students researched the meanings of symbols and colours to capture what their Wampum Belts represent.

Through ongoing learning, students engage with information about the role that treaties play in our collective lives and relationships and how, within our nation and community, we are all treaty people with treaty rights and responsibilities.
